Provenance..
Developed during the extraordinary Group B rally era, the Ford RS200 was conceived as a purpose-built competition machine rather than an adaptation of an existing road car.
While rivals based their entries upon production models, Ford Motorsport took a more ambitious route — designing a rally car first and producing a limited number of road-going versions purely to satisfy homologation requirements.
Constructed at Ford Motorsport’s Boreham facility between 1984 and 1986, the RS200 featured a composite body designed by Filippo Sapino of Ghia Design Studio surrounding a purpose-built chassis created by Formula One designer Tony Southgate together with engineer John Wheeler.
The result was a mid-engined, four-wheel drive platform with a front-mounted gearbox, engineered to achieve near perfect weight distribution.
Among the final RS200s produced were twenty “Special” or S-specification cars, developed following a proposal from Canadian enthusiast Murray DeWert. These cars combined increased performance with greater usability and comfort, creating what many regard as the ultimate road-going RS200.
Chassis #138 is among these rare S models and is particularly significant as one of only two examples finished by Ford in Ferrari Rosso Chiaro Red.

History..
Prior to purchase, the car’s first and only registered keeper David visited Ford Motorsport at Boreham to select his RS200 directly from available examples.
The final Red car remaining was originally built in left-hand drive configuration. Recognising the customer’s preference, Ford Motorsport converted the car to right-hand drive prior to registration and delivery.
First registered on 18 October 1990, the car remained with David until our purchase late 25'.
Unusually for a car of this rarity, chassis #138 was not confined to static display. Instead it has been enjoyed as intended, covering just under 20,000 miles across more than three decades of careful ownership. David was a regular to race meets all over the UK, especially Silverstone where this car was allowed to often park in the paddock such was everyone's admiration for the vehicle.
The delivery day itself was documented on film by the owner, who recorded the occasion and early experiences with the car. This footage can be viewed by clicking the video link attached and provides a rare period insight into RS200 ownership when new.
Maintenance & Care..
Regular use has been matched by consistent specialist maintenance throughout the car’s life.
The history file contains numerous invoices from recognised RS200 and Cosworth specialists including:
Gordon Spooner Engineering
Graham Hathaway Racing
Geoff Page Engineering
TME Motorsport Engineering
This continuous professional care reflects the owner’s intention to maintain the car mechanically rather than preserve it as a static collection piece.
Notable Drivers..
Unlike many RS200 examples that quickly entered collections or motorsport conversion programmes, chassis #138 remained within private ownership from new.
Its single registered keeper enjoyed the car as a road-going grand touring machine rather than a competition vehicle — an approach that has preserved both originality and authenticity throughout its life.
The RS200 model itself remains synonymous with the Group B era and drivers such as:
Ari Vatanen
Stig Blomqvist ( Whom actually drove this very car at a display day )
Kalle Grundel
Malcolm Wilson
whose competition exploits cemented the RS200’s place within rallying folklore.
Current Condition..
Presented in exceptionally well maintained condition following long-term enthusiast ownership.
Key features include:
Original Ferrari Rosso Red factory finish
Rare right-hand drive factory conversion
Comprehensive maintenance history file
Authenticity documentation
Air-conditioning system supplied with the car
The car remains mechanically maintained and usable, reflecting decades of careful stewardship rather than static preservation.
Summary..
One of just twenty RS200 S models produced — and one of only two finished in Rosso Red — chassis #138 represents a uniquely specified example of Ford Motorsport’s most ambitious road car.
Retained by a single owner since new and carefully maintained throughout nearly thirty-five years of use, it stands as a rare survivor from the Group B era, combining exceptional rarity with genuine usability and an unusually personal ownership history.
Chassis #138 comes complete with its never before fitted red competition seats and non split rim wheels, both of which were supplied with the car when new.
